School of Law graduate and trainee barrister Isabel Buchanan has a written a book on her time at a Lahore legal firm defending clients on death row.

Buchanan graduated from Glasgow’s School of Law with an LLB in 2009, where she was awarded the David Theodore Lowe prize for excellence in Jurisprudence. She returned to the School to complete an MRes in Legal Theory the following year.

‘Trials: On Death Row in Pakistan’ documents her time in Lahore as a legal intern.  She moved to the city in 2011 to take up a placement at a legal firm run by a young Pakistani lawyer.  The firm provides pro bono representation to Pakistan's poorest and most vulnerable prisoners facing the death penalty.  Buchanan describes the risks that the firm took in taking such cases, as well as the changes to the criminal justice system that have taken place in recent years.

Isabel later studied at Harvard as a Kennedy Scholar and has now returned to the UK where she is carrying out her traineeship as a barrister in London.
