The Scholarships Fund

The Scholarships Fund

Education makes a huge difference to people’s lives. A scholarship is a gift with great impact that will resonate into the future and for many of our supporters the ability to help individuals to achieve their potential is a very rewarding experience.

What do scholarships do?

  • Raise the aspirations and unlock the potential of talented young people from any background, from anywhere in the world.
  • Attract talented students who then go on to contribute to Scotland’s world-wide success, enhance the productivity of the Scottish and UK economies and increase Scotland’s cultural diversity.
  • Give students the opportunity to advance knowledge and technology for the improvement of life for everyone.
  • Build on the great tradition of philanthropy which over hundreds of years has helped Glasgow make an impression on the world.

What types of Scholarship can I support?

The University has several different types of Scholarship for you to support.

Click on the headings below to get further information about the Scholarships you can support at Glasgow.

Talent Scholarships

Talent Scholarships are aimed at supporting excellent students who could otherwise face financial difficulties studying at University.

They help to ensure that Glasgow continues to attract students of ability and potential from a broad socio-economic base throughout the UK. We are proud to be the UK research-led University which attracts the greatest number of students from areas of little or no tradition of participation in higher education.

You can name a full Talent Scholarship with a gift of £1,000 per annum for 3-5 years.

Postgraduate Research Scholarships

Full scholarships for research students are particularly prized, helping to give opportunity at Glasgow to the very best and brightest students.  Without scholarship support, many talented individuals would be unable to realise their potential.

By supporting a young researcher with a scholarship you will be supporting the development of a discipline or activity you care about with a gift which has the potential to have great impact that will resonate into the future.

Please contact us if you would like to fund and name a full scholarship.

Glasgow Centre for International Development Scholarships

In addition to the Commonwealth Scholarships, the University has also launched the Glasgow Centre for International Development (GCID) PhD Scholarship Scheme. The Scheme is aimed at high achieving candidates from a small number of eligible countries in Africa and Asia who wish to pursue a PhD at the University.

GCID builds on the university’s historical tradition of engagement with low-income countries through its unique range of expertise in the areas of human wellbeing and animal health, the economy, the environment, learning and citizenship. The aim is to use a strong interdisciplinary approach to make a significant contribution to international development through new partnerships with universities in the Global South and contribution to the UN Millennium Development Goals.

The scheme supports those students coming from the 14 least developed countries of the Commonwealth through the provision of a full scholarship covering the cost of tuition fees, travel and maintenance.  The remaining 39 scholarships will cover the cost of tuition fees only.

Glasgow CARA Research Fellowship

Council for At-Risk Academics (CARA) Fellowship

For over eighty years the Council for At-Risk Academics (CARA) has provided refuge to academics who have been forced to seek sanctuary in the United Kingdom as a result of discrimination, persecution, suffering or violence.

A University of Glasgow CARA Research Fellowship will support academics in this situation by enabling them to come to Glasgow to rebuild their skills, working with fellow academics and accessing University facilities.

A donation to the University of Glasgow CARA Research Fellowship will help us to continue to defend academic freedom.

Glasgow Centre for International Development

A gift to the David Livingstone Postgraduate Memorial Scholarship Fund in the Glasgow Centre for International Development

Gifts help provide opportunities for high achieving candidates from the developing world to undertake a PhD at the University. The scheme builds on the University’s tradition of engagement with low-income countries.

There are limited opportunities for talented students from these countries to develop their studies due to lack of funding. GCID scholarships have the power to make a significant impact on international development by offering students the chance to develop their skills and contribute to their home country.  Gifts of £500 (or £10 per month for four years) and over are recognised with a naming opportunity through our Gifted Scheme.

Our current priority is to award £20,000 pa PhD scholarships from the fund.
